ACNE SCAR NON-COSMETIC TREATMENT

Acne Scar Treatment

Acne scar is a nightmare for all who have it and also a major challenge for doctors to treat it. There are many different types of acne scars like- Boxcar scar, Ice pick scar, Rolling scar and Keloids in worst cases. The treatment of acne scar also differs depending upon its type and severity. The available treatment modalities are

1. Laser Resurfacing:-

Fractional laser resurfacing utilizes fractionated beam to induce thousands of micro punctures to skin leaving areas of intact skin in between. This laser energy is delivered to deep layers of skin. It stimulates collagen formation and promotes natural healing process. Over the time scar becomes smoother, softer with improved skin texture. Generally one to three treatment sessions are required. The downtime after each treatment is about 4-5 days.

2. Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling:-

In this very tiny microneedles are used to deliver radiofrequency energy to deep layers of skin stimulating collagen and elastin production. The superficial layers of skin are bypassed so downtime is less. The acne scars are smoothened out and skin texture improves. Generally two to three treatment sessions are required but it depends upon type of scar and areas to be treated. Post procedure some minor bleeding is expected but it stops soon. A topical numbing agent is applied before procedure to make this procedure comfortable. A great advantage of RF Micronnedling is very less chances of post procedure hyperpigmentation which makes it an ideal choice in dark skinned individuals.

3. Subcision:

This procedure is used for deep scars and involves inserting a needle underneath the acne scar. Neddle breaks the fibrous adhesions and releases scar from surrounding tissue. The scar is pushed towards surface. This is commonly combined with dermal fillers of dermal fat grafting to add volume and stretch out the skin.

4. Dermal Fillers/ Dermal Fat Grafting:

Deep, dish like acne scars which are supple can be treated with dermal fillers or fat injections. They add volume under the skin so it gets stretched out. The scar will rise to the surface. In addition trauma induced by needle puncture will also stimulate collagen production and body’s own natural healing process.
