How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

As laser light enters skin, it is absorbed by melanin, a pigment present in skin and hair. This light energy destroys hair root and hair falls out.

Almost every area of body can be treated with laser hair removal. The common areas are face, legs, underarms, chest, back and bikini area. Few areas which are not suitable for laser hair removal are- inside ears & nostrils, under the eyebrows.

Total number of treatment sessions required is different in different individuals and it depends upon hair thickness , hair color and skin type. Generally most patients require6-10 treatment sessions.

All our body and face hairs go through three distinct phases of growth- Anagen, Telogen & Catagen. Anagen is growing phase and most effective for the laser hair reduction. At any given time approximately 20-30% of hairs on body and face are in anagen phase. Different hair follicles enter in anagen phase at different time and so multiple treatment sessions are required to target all hairs in their most vulnerable anagen phase.

With latest technology laser hair removal is virtually pain free. You may feeling like small pinches or rubber band snapping across your skin for fraction of a second. Most patients do not require any numbing cream however patient with sensitive skin can be prescribed a cream before laser procedure.

During first consultation we assess your hair type, color, skin type and areas to be treated. A patch test will be performed to ensure safety of the treatment. Then a suitable treatment schedule will be decided.

Avoid waxing, threading & tweezing before treatment.

Avoid bleaching your hair as laser needs pigmented follicles to target.

Avoid sun exposure and tanning 4 weeks before procedure.

You will be asked to shave the area which is to be treated with laser.

After the laser treatment skin may be reddish and irritated which lasts for a day or two. A topical cream may be prescribed to protect the healing skin. The skin may remain sensitive for subsequent weeks so avoid sunlight, avoid exfoliating agents, strong make up. Also avoid plucking and waxing of hair in treated areas.

The hairs treated effectively with laser treatment will not grow back and are removed permanently. However factors such as hormonal changes, polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) can result in new hair growth which may require additional treatment sessions.
